About Well & Field
Last updated
Well & Field explains the two systems city homes never think about: the private well that supplies the water and the septic system that treats it afterwards.
Why this site exists
More than 43 million Americans get their water from their own well, and EPA estimates that more than one in five US homes uses a septic system. Nobody tests that water or inspects that tank for you. The good information exists, but it's scattered across state health departments and university extension PDFs, often with tables that don't agree with each other, while the top search results tend to come from companies selling filters or pumping services.
We pull the official guidance together, explain it in plain English, show where the sources disagree, and turn the tables and formulas into calculators.
Who runs it, and who we aren't
Well & Field is a small independent site run by Sergio Barragán from Spain. We are not well drillers, septic installers, water treatment dealers or public health officials, and we don't pretend to be. Our job is research and explanation: guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools and checked against every source they cite, as explained in how we research. When a situation needs a licensed professional or your local health department, the guides say so.
How we make money
The site is free. In the future it may show advertising and include clearly labeled affiliate links, which pay us a commission if you buy something. Neither will ever decide what a guide recommends, and we don't sell water treatment, testing, well or septic services ourselves.
